Running computer into HD-TV?
 

Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else, but I can't seem to find any simple answer to this. Basically, I want to connect my computer to my HD-TV to watch various things, but so far I haven't gotten anywhere. What I have done is run an S-Video cable from my video card (Rage 128 Pro) to my TV, but nothing is happening, regardless of what i do to the settings on my computer. Is there something simple I am missing, or is my computer too ancient to accomplish this? TIA for any help...

Knowing what kind of TV you have would be helpful. Video card details and operating system would be good, too.

My TV has DVI and HDMI inputs. Yours may not.

Sure, my TV is a Sony KP-57WS510; my OS is Windows 2000; video card is a Rage 128 Pro. I have had others run their laptops into my TV through the component connection, which is what I wanted to do; I'm not aiming for anything major in terms of presentation, just functionality.

I'll just toss out a few thoughts.

What does the display settings look like on the pc when the cable is connected? Does the pc recognize the tv? What is the S-Video setting at? Is there another cable connected to the same input as the S-Video connection?

Are you sure it's an s-video output? I only ask, as there is a multi-use output (VIVO port) on many video cards that looks strikingly similar to an s-video output.

My Nvidia 6200 card has one, and I have a component video dongle hooked up to it.

Your PC should automatically detect what signal is being sent out.

You should get a better video card, that thing is ancient. S-video is going to look like crap. Does your card have a DVI output?

If you have a VGA input you can hook your existing card up that way too.

if you've already experimented with all your settings in dual monitor properies, then it has to be a setting on your TV.
No matter hold old your PC or TV are, it should most definately still work. Try disconnecting any component cables on your TV and see fif it works then. Some TV's only allow either comp/S video connections

And for some TVs, you have to select in a menu whether you want a particular input to be component or S video.
