New receiver: Multiple HDMI inputs or an external switcher?

Seems like a receiver with more than a couple HDMI inputs is in the four-digit range. A cheaper option looks like an HDMI switcher. I hear lots of talk about using a remote that supports macros to make the HDMI switcher a non-issue. Couldn't you have all of your sources going through the switcher, connect the switcher to your receiver, and then receiver to your TV? I would think doing it this way, the only thing you'd ever have to switch would be the switcher itself. The receiver could be left on whatever HDMI port the switcher is plugged into, right? Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks!

That only works if all your sources are HDMI. Or if you have some way to convert everything to HDMI signals, most switchers won't do that and not all receivers, either.

Harmony, Home Theater Master are 2 places to start for remotes. The difference in using a real remote instead of 5 of them is wonderful. other than the Eject button, my remote is the only thing I actually touch in my system. I'd hate to have it be a pain to use.

I understand that. I guess having multiple sources is where the macros come into play...

Thanks!
