DVR Suggestions?

Ok, I'm looking to actually get a second DVR for my house. I have Comcast currently, and have their DVR box. However, my wife wanted another one for a TV upstairs with the new baby, she is up there more often than the normal TV room.

I don't want TiVo or anything with a monthly fee. A second one from Comcast would cost too much per month. It's like $10+extra outlet a month.

Any suggestions?

I notice Best Buy has a Toshiba one for $350...which is a little pricey to me.

If you are unwilling to go with a monthly fee with TiVo or another Comcast box and a $350 charge for that standalone is too much, it seems like the only options left are: 1) MythTV on a computer, 2) Finding a ReplayTV on eBay, 3) Finding a DVD Recorder on eBay with TiVo Basic (which is a very limited free service) or 4) a VCR.

I was hoping to get something on EBAY. Just curious what to look for. I saw the Toshiba one on EBAY for under $300.....but just curious if someone has a similiar or better product.

I don't understand. You're willing to spend $300 to buy one from the store/online, but you're unwilling to spend an extra $10 a month to rent? My vote would be the rental for $10/mo.

If you are patient, and keep an eye out you can find a TiVo series 2 for free after rebate from BB or CC. Then the money you were going to spend would cover the unit for almost 2 years.

I got both of my TiVo units using this method.

EDIT: CC has a series 2 80hr for $50 or the dual tuner for $100 after MIR right now.

I guess one lump sum is easier to swallow than rather giving the cable company my money. I already pay too much for cable.

I was looking to get one cheaper than $300 also...

I have a Toshiba SD-H400 which is a DVDp player with built in Tivo. But it is BASIC tivo so no monthly fee. Works pretty well. I don't know if they still sell them or not. I paid like $225 for it several years ago at Best Buy I think,
