Should I upgrade the subwoofer and speakers or the whole system?
I have a Panasonic SC-HT400 receiver. I have been using it for the last three years and would like to know if it would make a difference if I upgrade the subwoofer and speakers that came with the system or if I would have to buy a new system to improve the sound. According to the operating guide the output per channel is 100W.

I was thinking of buying a powered subwoofer in the range of $300 to $400. I have a passive subwoofer at the moment. Will there be an issue to connect a powered subwoofer to my system?
In a couple of months I would like to upgrade the speakers. I have not looked at the prices of speakers yet, but I am hoping to find something for $600. If its more expensive I would probably replace them in segments.

If you are looking for a sub, HSU's are awesome - love mine.
Also, look into the HTD level 2 which would seem to fit your budget. Level 3's if you have the spare cash.

Thanks for your advice. I finally upgraded to HTD level 3 speakers and I love them. I am glad I waited, but now I am thinking that my receiver does not do them justice.
So I am in need of advice again. I was thinking of getting the Onkyo TX-SR705. Would this improve the sound even though the output is 100W per channel (the same as my Panasonic)?

dont believe the wattage rating hype.
your panasonic rated at 100w v the onkyo rated the same will not sound even close to the same. the onkyo would sound much better.
the receiver choice is a good one.
