Is my DVD player "multi region"? Please advise.

A friend of mine bought a $30 DVD player for me a couple of weeks ago because it specifically said it can play PAL DVDs and sure enough, the box proudly claimed so *however* the user manual said it does not play DVDs from other region codes BUT late last year the same friend burned some UK stuff onto DVD for me but my Sony player refused to play it, giving a message that the disc was "prohibited." This PAL friendly player, on the other hand, played them just fine.

I came across a web page that listed my player as being "multi-region" but didn't go into detail at all so I'm not sure how much stock I can put into it.

The DVD player I'm refering to is a Sungale DVD2030-5.1

I'd love to buy some region 2 discs but don't want to waste the money if it's not capable of playing them. Any help would be appreciated.

Typically, DVD Players that can be made Region-Free require a hack (enter a code or something).

A great place for hacks is videohelp.com. Here's the listing for that brand: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.ph...&Search=Search

Either their isn't a hack for that model, or there just isn't enough people with that player to find one.

So the fact that it plays PAL is not an indication it can play other regions?

Given the fact it does play PAL makes me believe there is a hack and the "just isn't enough people with that player to find one" option is correct.

You could get a Philips 642. It plays Divx files, PAL discs, and is easily region-free hacked. You can get it for around $40 either used or a refurb on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP642.../dp/B000204SWE

Here's the hack: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.ph...hilips+DVP+642
