Best region free pal/ntsc dvd with HDMI?

I have a wonderfull SD-4900 that is working like a charm. But it has not HDMI slot so I have to find another dvd...

Can you help me, which one do you suggest?
Note that I see a lot of PAL dvd!

Thanks!

I'd have to say without contest the Oppo HD-970. Check out oppodigital.com for details.

Oppo thirded.

Josh, didn't you really mean the 971? The 970 is a great player, and it's the one I have, but the 971 is rated higher.

True it is my friend, but he said he needed HDMI, and the 971 has only DVI (i figured that he probably wanted one cable for all instead of DVI-HDMI and additional audio cable).

Wow, the Oppo 970 has been thirded as a great PAL player, even though it can't do 2:2 cadence? Unbelievable. If you care at all about PAL quality playback, don't get the 970.

The 971 is capable of performing a 2:2 cadence, but as you note it's DVI only. Oppo will be releasing a replacement for the 971 "sometime this Fall", and it's expected to be essentially the same Faroudja-based player, but with HDMI and in black. It's also supposed to include SACD capability, but if the 970 is any indication, it will be the lousy "convert-to-PCM" variety.

I too am looking forward to the next gen Oppo flagship player.

Every Pal DVD I've thrown in my Oppo 970HD has played beautifully with no noticable distortions. Unless you're a Videophile I've gotta recommend it too.

Without a doubt the best DVD player I've owned. DVDA & SACD are a big plus as well as the USB slot & even DIVX. For $150 it's likely impossible to do much better.

Spiky you'll be impressed with this...

You'll want the 970 because it will output 480i over HDMI.

Projector!!!!

The next DVD player from Oppo, the DV-981HD, has appeared in ads in S&V and WSR. "Fall" availability. The pictures in the ads reveal that it is black and the ad copy mentions that it has HDMI, 1080p, SACD/DVD-Audio and, unlike the 970 but like the 971, has a Faroudja de-interlacer and so presumably does proper 2:2 cadence for PAL disks. No word on the price, exact release date, or even confirmation that it can be made region-free.

Oooo. Any pics? This one sounds good. I would be surprised if it was region-free out of the box, that's one of the primary selling points of the players.

The word on the price is $249 (but someone at AVS called Oppo and was told $200). There is also talk that there is yet another universal player coming out from Oppo in Q107.

Anyone tried this player? I'm looking at getting a new player just for playing pal discs. I have an HD-A1 for everything else. Trying to decide on the pioneer or maybe waiting for the oppo. MB may be an issue though.

It got a 67 in the DVD Benchmark shootout. Oppo got a high 90s.

I'm looking at the oppo site. It doesn't seem to say anything about the players being region-free. Will both of their players handle discs from all regions?

so the 971 would be the best choice...?

for me the most important features are NTSC-Pal conversion
region free
up-conversion for region 1 dvds...

I have a free hdmi slot on my panasonic 42'', so I want it to go througt this slot (cause the plasma doesn't play hd in component slot-manual says!)

So using a dvi-hdmi isn't a problem for me... (sound is going anyways in the yamaha receiver...)

so 970, 971 or wait for next 971 hdmi?

Thanks again!

I am wondering the same thing. My new TV should be here in the next week or so and has an HDMI input (which my current LCD does not have). I would like to purchase the one that has the best PAL DVD quality, and solid upconversion of not only R1 DVDs, but non-R1 DVD's. A lot to ask I know

I know hkflix.com has the 970 and the 971, both of which come with free cables. The 970 with an HDMI and the 971 with a DVI-HDMI converting cable.

I am about to get an upconverting dvd player probaly the oppo 970 ... but How well does a actual Hd-dvd player do upconverting compared to the oppo? Is it better, almost the same, or worse? Becuase I could spend an extra 50 bucks and get the xbox 360 hd add on and get King kong HD... Or take the 150 and put it towards a real Hd-dvd player that does the job better/ the same?
