Which Sony TV should I get?

Sony 50" E-Series 3LCD Rear Projection Television - KDF50E2000

http://www.abtelectronics.com/product/24357.html

or this one

Sony 50" Grand WEGA SXRD Rear Projection HDTV - KDS50A2000

http://www.abtelectronics.com/product/24610.html

Is the SXRD technology worth the extra $550.00?

Or should I get the 55" TV
Sony 55" 3LCD Rear Projection HD Television In Black - KDF55E2000
http://www.abtelectronics.com/product/23923.html

or none of the above? I want a TV about 46"-55" and less then 2K

What do you all think of these TV's?

Sdallnct 10-03-06 12:52 PM

Is there a reason you are only looking at Sony? I'm going to be getting one of the 46" model digital sets and have it narrow down to the Samsung and the Sony. I was both models (50" versions) side by side at the new Circuit City that opened. While I know these were not set up perfect, I "think" I prefered the Samsung.

The Sony had a "digital" feel to it. It was incredibly sharp, almost to sharp. The Samsung seemed more natural and had better blacks (tho not as much so I was would have thought given all the DLP v. LCD talk). Also, the Samsung seemed to have a little more depth, almost 3-D effect to it.

-I'm only looking at 720p models.

I guess I am sony biased. Always liked Sony TV's. I want to replace my Sony 36" CRT with a new set. Based on what I read, the SONY's are getting great reviewes. I think I am leaning toward the 50" myself. The 55" would be to big...
If I get the 50, what would the size of the image be if I don't stretch the image?

I will say that the SXRD has one of the nicest pictures that I've seen on an HDTV.

I bought the first tv(3LCD) you have listed last year. The SXRD's had just come out and cost around $4k for the 50-inch. I love my 3LCD, but if I could have afforded the SXRD, I would have bought that one instead. It's amazing how much tv's prices come down over a year's time.

ANDREMIKE 10-03-06 02:02 PM

But is the SXRD TV picture only better if you are using blue ray DVD players and such? Does the picture vary that much if I am just watching regular HDTV programs from my cable box and using a standard DVD Player?

oh and I found the SXRD 50" for $2250.00 versus $1600.00 for the other one.

Sdallnct 10-03-06 07:38 PM

Yes, I was looking at the 3LCD models, NOT the SXRD

I went to Circuit city last night and looked at the TV's. I wasn't too impressed with any of the projection based TV's. I also thought the 46" had a sharper image then the 50". I then walked over to the plasma TV's and thought the picture was MUCH better. I would definitly pick a plasma over the rear projection..
now to find a 50" for about 2K. The panasonics looked pretty nice.

I'd be careful just on that observation.

We have a brand new Circuit City and it is almost funny what they did. All the flat panels (Plasma and LCD) are in one area and seperate are the RP's. All the flat panels are in an area with lower lighting and they obviously took care in set up. The RP's, even the digitals on on shelves out in the middle of the floor area, with a ton of direct lighting. The CC now offers "install" of flat panels.

So it is rather obvious they are pushing the flat panels and the install packages. I'm not saying some plasmas aren't better, I'm just saying it really throws up a flag when CC is so blanently trying to make those flat panels look better.

No, it is not ONLY better with these new discs. But, all TVs should look better with them. And SXRD should be better than either LCD or DLP, esp in the black level. Any SDTV (including DVD) is going to depend more on the scaler technology in your player and TV than on the display technology.

And judging TVs is very hard in a store. In addition to what Sdallnct said, these stores seldom set up any of the TVs properly. None of them are ever calibrated and the calibration maintained. You can go in there and adjust the video settings and they'll just stay that way til someone else messes around. The absolute best TV might look like crap on the display floor. Tweak it properly and you'd be floored.

I always try to find comments/reviews by pro calibrators on the web when shopping for TVs. They know how to set them up, and can do a true comparison between models to see which is able to look the best. Most HDTVs can look pretty good these days. Home Theater Spot is a good place to meet calibrators, if Paul can keep his site running.

I bought the 3LCD one back in July and I love it. I have no experience with the other two models, but I'm very happy with the one I bought.

I've been very happy with my Sony 16:9 CRT, but I want something larger than 30" and this 46" LCD Projection Sony is one I'm heavily leaning towards. High ratings too and well under 2K:

I thought the SXRD series were prone to a "green blob" effect.

Nice price on that Sony. If I could only convince my wife :(

That is the one I am planning on getting as soon as Best Buy or Circuit City runs another 24+ months of no interest.
