Need a New TV for the Living Room

Our present TV is slowly dying - works a couple of hours and shuts off - and then another two or three hour wait before it works again. It's a 30" Toshiba CRT that's about 8 years old...

I'd like to replace it with one in the same size range 27" to 32" inches (preferably not Toshiba ). Money is a major issue, so I think my best bet is to stay with CRT, go with a flat screen, and choose a tv that is able to receive digital broadcasts with possible hdtv readiness (sharpest image possible in this price range). A progressive scan DVD player is hooked up to the present tv. The replacement one should be one that is ready to hook up with my DIRECTV box and the component cables from the DVD player. It would be nice if it had a USB port to display digital camera pics - but I know I'm probably dreamin' there. And Surround Sound...

Any ideas guys? What's my best bet for less than $600 out the store?

You should be able to get a good 1080i native CRT TV at that price. I would encourage you to avoid Toshiba. I had lot of trouble getting HD signals on my 30hf85.

Well, there are now TVs with an ATSC tuner, but not HDTVs.

You should be able to find an actual HDTV, though.
