Subwoofer suggestions

I am seeking a good powered subwoofer for under $300. Any suggestions?

Save at least $200 more and get a HSU. You won't regret it

Or save another $200 and get an SVS :D

There's some validity to both of the above posters suggestions, but in your budget you might want to consider either the Dayton subs available at parts express or the Athena ps400. Pretty much dominate the low-end discussion at the avsforum. I think they're both available for under $200. Definitely some compromises, but better than the sony HTIB packages.

It's pretty basic. Something like a Sony HTiB "sub" is not actually even a sub. They bottom out about where an average tower bottoms out. Not deep at all.

The Dayton subs can do fairly low range, a bit under 30Hz, with low power. If you are just looking for a bit lower bass than your other speakers, they will work. As will most subs. Most are "one note wonders", that are so loud at 50Hz you will never hear the 30Hz because you won't bother turning it up loud enough to hear that low stuff. Most people don't care about more than this and fall into this category.

If you actually want to feel and hear some real bass (think standing next to an airport), save for the HSU/SVS type subs, which can do close to 20Hz with serious power. The wait will kill you, but the reward will be worth it.

Get the Acoustech H-100. It has gotten great reviews at avsforum.com. I got one on ebay for about $215 including shipping and handling. You could probably snatch one up on ebay for about $250 since the guy I bought it from is not accepting any more offers for it.

Interesting on the Acoustech, I'll have to check out their line of speakers for future reference. I have an old reliable JBl PB12 myself and I can't complain, it isn't a SVS or a HSU but I'm happy with it.

If I were in your shoes and already have $300 saved up, I'd wait and put it towards a SVS, but of course once you look at their subs, you may want to save more for the next model up and up and up, etc. :)

If you want really cheap, keep an eye open at the Onkyo site. They sell refurb's for less then a $100. Mine had comsetic damage only it it was very minor. As for being cheap, no it didn't get very low or was particularly tight, but it did add depth to movies and for that it was nice.

I say was, as I recently was cleaning out my garage and decided I would never use it again (I bought subs when I bought new speakers) and donated it to Goodwill.

I plan to do a pretty much overhaul of my entire media room electonics in the next 6-18 months. I think I will go with a small SVS sub. I never never read about a more universally accepted product. I have yet to read someone not liking the SVS, which in the world of electronics is just amazing.

I've had very good results with my HSU as well. Although if you really want something nice, I would go with any Velodyne sub.

It would also depend on what other speakers you are using.

While I recognize the benefits of a HSU or SVS, as they are the BEST, in your case, I would look at JBL. I have a JB-12, and it's a real beast. Great deal too ($200). Check it out.

seems like a good deal,

What do people think of this one? Seems like a good price, but I am curious to know if anyone knows anything about it.

Well that one review is a complete farce, but this is a solid little sub. However, I wouldn't recommend anything under 10"; it just has never seemed to really push the air like a 10-12" sub can.
