A speaker recommendation thread
 

Yes, I know there have been questions like this before but I just want to make sure that I get the right info so I can pass it along. A co-worker of mine was asking me what speakers I would recommend to her for her godfather. She didn't mention any budget whatsoever so I recommended what I think are the best speakers we sell at the store we both work at.

I recommended the RF-63 (http://www.klipsch.com/product/produ...e&rmore=False), the RC-62 (http://www.klipsch.com/product/product.aspx?cid=986), the RS-62 (http://www.klipsch.com/product/produ...e&rmore=False), and the RSW-12 (http://www.klipsch.com/product/produ...e&rmore=False).

I recommended these because I’ve personally listened to them with numerous film soundtracks and concert DVDs (I’ve yet to listen to any CDs on them) and I think they sound fantastic. Still, I’d like to offer her more options. What speakers do you all feel that are comparable, if not better than these? I’ve listened to MK and B&W and a few others but not as extensively as these particular Klipsch speakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As an owner of the RF3 towers and related speakers (barely a step down from those), I can say these are great. For TV and movies. I just love the Klipsch horns for listening to spoken word, they are unmatched in value in my opinion.

Now, when I pop in an SACD of Mozart or something, they are well down on my list. The horns are clearly too harsh for such a broud range of music. I would prefer Paradigm, Martin Logan, or others if music was the more important usage. Perhaps an older listener would find less harshness, though. Hearing gets worse, esp in the higher frequencies.

Oh, and Klipsch makes some decent subs, but there are other brands (in the same price range) that are better in virtually every way possible. Ex: Velodyne, Hsu Research, and of course, SVS.

What has he listened to? I would recommend that he come and listen to them with material he is familiar with. Then go to some other stores and listen to some others. The best choice always rises to the top.

Everyone's hearing is different, he needs a starting point.

An amazing part of speakers to me is that there are so many "good" ones that sound so different. All things being equal, nothing has a greater influence on the sound the your speakers and there are many, many that sound different but are all good. For example I have never been won over on the sound of Klipsch. In college I actually was a delivery/set up guy at a high end audio store and delivered, set up many a big floor standing Klipsch (I think there was a Kornerhorn and La Scala or something). These were very expensive and people loved them. I never did.

I prefer the sound of British made KEF, Celestion, etc. However many especially those who cut their teeth on JBL would laugh at these speakers.

You just got to listen. Preferably with the electronics you plan to use.

That's what I figured but was afraid my line of reasoning was flawed. Hence, I I turned to the experts. Thanks to all for your responses. :)
