DVD compatibility issue

Have several dozen DVD+Rs dubbed from videaotapes (all finalized!) using a Magnafox DVD Recorder/VCR combo unit, which recently went belly up. Replaced the dead Magnavox with an LG combo unit. However, none of the DVD+Rs play on the new unit. Do I throw them all in the trash, or is there a workaround? Someone has suggested ripping them on a computer DVD burner and re-burning them onto new disks. But, before I invest in a DVD burner and software, will this work? Also, who do I yell at for this intolerable state of affairs, Magnavox, LG, or the industry in general?

Sorry, dude. Probably no workaround other than the re-encode on a PC. It's possible the LG simply can't do DVD+R at all, or it doesn't like your media or your former recorder. Welcome to burning DVDs. There are currently 6 or 7 burning formats, I've lost track, and it confuses the players just as much as the people. The best advice is to use the best media (read: most compatible, I like TDK or Taiyo Yuden) and the most compatible recorders. I doubt the Magnavox (and probably most VHS/DVD combos) qualifies for that group, unfortunately.

Places like videohelp.com have compatibility reports that can help you choose which to buy. Look up your LG model there. You may want to be proactive in what you buy in the future due to incompatibility problems.

Edit:
Answer is the industry in general.
