Picture controls on an old RCA TV

I've got an old RCA TV here that I'm setting up in the bedroom to play games and watch a few DVDs in bed. The TV is around 12 years old. Anyway the picture controls were all messed up when I hooked it up tonight. I've adjusted them to where it looks better but I have a few questions/problems still with the TV.

The TV has on screen controls for picture, brightness, etc..., but on the back of the TV there are 2 small knobs. One is labeled F, and one is S. I figured out that F is some kind of focus for the TV. The S knob I'm still not sure what its for. It makes the TV bright and dark. If you turn it all the way in one direction the screen will get white and have a few bright lines running though it. If you turn it the other way the screen will turn black. I put it somewhere in the middle where the picture looked ok, and then finished adjusting using the on screen controls. Has anyone seen this knob before on the back of a TV and what is its real purpose?

Also the TV seems to have a slight "ghosting". Its only noticable on white backgrounds with words, but the words appear double. You can barely see this and I only noticed it while sitting very close to the TV hooking some stuff up. Is there any way to fix this? The TV does not have a degauss button or setting, and there isn't any magnets or unshielded speakers near it.
