Looks cool ... but how can Blu Ray beat that price

Sweet, but I'm waiting for the Blu-Ray one, as I think that's the format that will be standing in the end. The price is definitely not prohibitive though.

I'm surprised they didn't add DVD-A to it.

Put Blu-Ray in PS3 and sell it for $400.

That's about $300 less than what I thought it would be. That is a big unit. Let's hope it doesn't strike out. :rimshot:

Are all HD-DVD players going to be HDMI-only? That would be a problem for me.

Since it looks like a format war, I'm waiting till someone releases an HD-DVD/Blue-Ray player. Samsung said they'd make one. Hopefully sooner then later.

I hope it is better quality than Toshiba's upconverting DVD players.

I'll never buy a first generation machine. Dont want to pay all that money to be a Beta Tester :)

All HD-DVD and all Blu-Ray, yes. It's a done deal. Analog HD via component is dead.

And then add in the cost of having to buy a remote for the PS3 unt to make a truly functional unit where you can sit on your couch and control it.

Man, they should have tried a little harder to make it look like a betamax player from 1982.

Samsung also announced their blu ray disc player..... for $1000

If you mean that all HDTV's that will be made will only have HDMI, that is probably true.

But...the 30 million HDTV owners now with component inputs only, we're the ones that hopefully will not get screwed.

What companies out there have or will put out a connection between the HDMI cable and my component input? Do you think that they'll charge an arm and a leg for it, especially since we "HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!"

Do you really think the industry would ignore and want to isolate that many customers???

A few weeks ago I researched a design for an HDMI to component transcoder. All the necessary components are commercially available. Total parts cost is around $70 so I expect a retail solution could cost <$200.

I seriously doubt that any of the major electronics manufacturers will sell such a box. They would much rather sell you a new TV. A Chinese or Korean off-brand might sell one under the radar (like a Sima Copymaster type device).

You can get an HDMI -> DVI converter (HDMI is basically DVI video + digial audio).

I'm hoping for that connection and I'm sure some small company will put one out. We know that Toshiba has a backward compatible HD player for our DVD collections.

I don't mind buying another player, I just hope that the player will be compatible with my A/V receiver. That's another big buck item!

Crap, I just couldn't afford to go out and buy everything all over again. If you had to buy all over again, who would buy all your old stuff??? Try throwing out a 65" Mit RPTV???
