What's "calibration" and "calibration disc"?

Just got myself a widescreen CRT HDTV. I'm still getting familiar with the whole HD arena and am coming across the term "calibration". Can someone briefly explain what that means? Seems to have something to do with re-doing the settings (using a calibration disc?) instead of relying on factory settings on the TV. Is this process usually necessary? If it is, why? Thanks for all your help.

A calibration disc will let you calibrate (adjust) the settings for video and audio. Straight out of the box, a tv's brightness and contrast settings, are set too high. Left this way, the tv will die sooner. The disc helps you get tv calibrated as good as you can get it, without a professional calibration.

Also, along with an SPL meter from Radio Shack, you can calibrate your systems speakers. This is getting each speaker adjusted to the exact same volume, as heard from the "sweet spot". That way, no sounds overpower any others. Very much worth the money and time..................
Good luck!

Using a calibration disc is the cheapest, and easiest way to get the best picture from your hdtv.Although, hiring a professional isf calibrater is the best way to go.

Many discs now have a test/set up routine on them, Star Wars has a THX optimizer, try that first!
