How old is your DVD player?

Bought mine in 06/00... time for an upgrade?

gcribbs 11-04-05 02:14 PM

bought an RCA 5200 in March 1998. Gave it to my Mom to use a few years back and it still works great today with no problems.

uberjoe 11-04-05 02:18 PM

A few months. Bought a Denon 1910 for the native scaling ability. A bit later I purchased a 50in Samsung DLP, and the player upgrade was well worth it.

Panasonic S25 in 2003. My first and only.

mike7162 11-04-05 03:07 PM

I've been through several models, but VCR's I've purchased in the mid-90's are still hanging around. No problems with players I had - I just like to upgrade every year.

N/A

To date, I still don't own a stand-alone DVD player. (Yet I have almost 500 DVDs).

I used to play DVDs on my roomate's Panasonic, now it's Xbox (meh) and PS2 (bleh) for playback.

negative 1 week ;) Have an Oppo on order that should be here next week.

I also have a portable that's about a year and half old and a 5 disc changer that's 2 or 3 years old now.

matome 11-04-05 03:42 PM

My main player is a Sony NS900V, purchased 12/01. I have newer ones (changers, region-free, etc.), but none can beat that one. My next upgrade will be to Blu-Ray.

Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. 11-04-05 03:50 PM

do newer DVD players have much of a picture upgrade over older players? Mine is a Sony DVPS360 and it still works well but if the picture shows up better I may upgrade. I may get a new one anyway that's region free.

nemein 11-04-05 04:24 PM

It all depends upon the capabilities you are looking for and what your current one has. Some of the things newer players will have will be "upscaling" and digital output to HD/ED TVs, also whether or not your old one is progressive scan. The bottom line is though if you still like your player and it does everything you want it to do there's no reason to upgrade ;)

BigSue 11-04-05 05:19 PM

My main DVD player is a Philips/Magnavox DVD-825 that I bought in 11/99. It can't play CDs anymore but plays 98% of my DVDs. I have a 2nd DVD player, a Magnavox 458, that I use for the oddball disc that won't play on the oldster. It's also used for DVD-Rs and PAL discs.

My oldest one is 5 years old and going strong

Mordred 11-04-05 05:46 PM

Looks like I've got the oldest which is still getting use (and not given away hehe) :)

I bought a Sony 550-DVP back in October of 1999. It's worked flawlessly and played a lot of discs. The model is so old it does it's own Dolby Digital decoding which it could output to a DVD "ready" receiver which didn't do decoding. I replaced the receiver with a Sony DA4ES two years ago, but the DVD player is still going strong. It was close to top of the Sony consumer line when I got it, so it's got all the features I could want. I'll replace it when I get a TV which can do progressive scan.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but how can you have thousands of dollars worth of DVDs and play them on an xbox/ps2? What sort of tv are you using? With a collection that large, I would think even an entry level Pioneer or Sony unit for 100 bucks is a must-have.

I got the 5500 at about the same time as you. I can't believe I paid $400 for it at Costco at the time. They were sure expensive back then. It's since been relegated to my daughter's room but it's still running strong. I've had about 10 players over the years and bought a Oppo last year. It's been my favorite player so far.

Comfort Eagle 11-04-05 08:56 PM

About 1.5years old? And it isnt some super player...but I still love it since it has great capabilities.

I'm still using my RCA from 1998. I'm looking for one to replace it, but haven't settled on anything yet.

I bought my Toshiba SD-2109 in April of 1999. Way back when the 2109 was the lowest DVD player available at a whopping $300 dollars.

Up until this week, I still used it as my primary player. I set up a projector in my basement and now I need something that at least has progressive scan, so I'll be updating very shortly.

My very first DVD player was a Panasonic DVD A-310. Cost me $700 over back in 1998. It 's plugged into a spare TV and still works. Though, it does get hot.

Trelach24 11-05-05 01:44 AM

I bought my Toshiba back when Best Buy still had about 8 aisles of VHS and one for DVDs. I had a little money and I wanted to be on the cutting edge of something. I didn't even really know what DVDs were back then. So I plopped down $250 on the thing, and took it home. Didn't even buy a DVD with it so of course when I got it home and set up I couldn't stand not using it so I had to run out and rent a DVD.

May 2000 - Sony 360
March 2002 - Panasonic Home Theater
Feb 2003 - Zenith RX-DV3 (Upgraded my speakers, what a difference!)

(Did buy a small DVD player for about $35 to put in my son's room, the DVD last about 8 months)

Filmmaker 11-05-05 04:35 PM

I bought my Sony DVP-S7000 in Aug. '98 and she's still my baby...

Anubis2005X 11-05-05 04:47 PM

My oldest one is a budget Sony player from summer 1998. Still works great. However, this last May I bought the Infocus 4805, and I figured the image wasn't going to be that great unless I got a better/ more modern DVD player (also wanted Progressive Scan and component outputs). So, I got one of the newer Sony models and the difference was stunning. Still have both.

Dubya 11-05-05 05:20 PM

September 97 - Panasonic DVD A-100, cost $500 at the time and still works fine but it is not my main player since it can't play DTS ;)
I won a Pioneer player in September 99, and bought a Sony in Dec 2003.

The Infidel 11-05-05 08:22 PM

I think I've had my Denon DVD2900 for a little over two years now.
