Dvd Storage Towers
 

I looking in to getting a dvd tower that holds at lease 500 DVD's. I would like to get one just for DVD's I see a lot of them are adjustable and you could lose wasted space cause the DVD's don't fit. Any suggestions?

The Billy from Ikea holds about 400 if you add a couple extra shelves (8 shelves at 50 per shelf) - so a little shy of what you're looking for. I'm guessing a couple of the narrower versions together might get you close to 500. I bought the optional light and glass shelves myself, which I think makes it look a little "sleeker". They are very sturdy and look great.

There are various options for height, width and color for the Billy's. I've seen pics of people's setup that have put multiple together at angles in room corners, etc that look very nice too.

Do some searching in this forum - this has come up many times with a lot of good feedback. I also gave serious consideration to the rotating shelves myself.

If you don't like the commercial options you could always build one yourself.

I'm kinda going that route to have something built. I want something big know, so down the road I don't have to look for storage again.

to see if they have anything that you'd like. They're a bit pricey, but they look fantastic in most rooms (very subtle, unlike many people's home theaters which tend to take on the look of the local Blockbuster). And if you're looking to not waste space, this is really a great option...

Boltz... meh. Be sure to see one in person before buying. The style is not everyone's cup of tea. And they are way overpriced for storage imo. 500 Discs, $380, genuine erector-set decor.

You may also want to consider a rotating rack (or 2). Some of these are tall and hold a lot, generally about 18" square. If some shelves have extra space on top, it's easy to add a few DVDs sideways there. Most adjustable shelves can be made the right height.

I built some racks and countersank them into the wall. The racks cost me ~$120 to build all three. They will hold about 1700 dvds. Don't know what the heck I'm gonna do here pretty soon though.

I don't have much space so I bought one of the 4-sided spinners. Holds I think 500 some, and was pretty cheap costing.

I just use 1" x 6" pine boards for the sides and shelves. They are easy to cut to the length you need and are ready to stain for a decent looking finish. For the backing, I used 1/4" oak plywood. I then decide how tall, wide, and how much space between shelves I want and cut all the pieces. I screw the top and bottom onto the side boards and then attach the shelves with 1/4" sheetrock screws. Then, I put on the backing, screw it into the outer borads, and use a chalk line to screw into the back of the shelves which provides plently of support for the weight of the DVDs and strengthens the entire structure. They are quite simple to make really. I made the 2 equal sized units in about 4 hours. Since a 1" x 6" is truely .75" x 5.5" and a wall has a 2 x 4 (actually 1.5" x 3.5") stud and approx .5" sheetrock/paneling, the shelves only protrude out of the wall about 1.75" if you countersink them. If you need more details, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I have a custom built shelf and a Billy from Ikea. With extra shelves and the extension up top, it fits perfectly. Also got a CD shelf add-in to break up the rows of DVDs. I love it.

Shellend, Which Billy do you have? I saw 1 that is 79 1/2 inches tall, and there's another one that says it has a height extension that is 93 1/4 inches tall. I'm looking at the taller one because I want it to hold as many dvd's as possible and don't like to see the extra space above bookcases. If yours is the 79' one, the other option would hold another 2 shelves maybe and another 100 dvds (not that I have that many yet).

I have the Billy with the extension. The extension is a separate part. You just buy the 79 1/2 and then you tack the extension on on top of it. It's not a seamless blend, but it works really well.

Of course, you have to realize that with the extension, the top of the billy is fixed at 79 1/2 and then you have another 14 inches or so. I think you could fit two rows of DVDs up there, not sure though - I'm not using the extension for DVDs as I'm using my other rack top to bottom and the Billy is just used for a few rows of DVDs, some CDs, and then some other storage.

But I'm quite happy with the Billy. Also got the CD add in and the shelves can be spaced perfectly for DVDs.

I have the 79" one. As already stated, you just add an extension to get the 93". I actually bought the extension originally, but took it back. It's been nearly 3 years, so I honestly can't remember exactly what it was about the extension that I didn't like.

The Billy's are exactly what I'm looking for as I need to find a new storage solution for my 2400+ discs. Only thing is it looks as if they don't have the bookcases in black any more, only white, and the 93" extensions don't come in white :(. I'm going to dedicate a room to disc storage and I really want to go to the ceiling with these, but it looks like it won't happen.

You might look around at Overstock.com. They usually have some a decent prices. I know Overstock is not a favorite retailer, but I have ordered a lot from them and never had a problem even when I returned something.

Anybody know of a storage solution with a closable, non-transpartent front (ie. doors)? Im not a nutty collector, so Ill only need to hold around 100-200.

Something like this would be cool, but Id like a higher quality piece.

Thanks for the heads up. That does look nice and is priced well, but I'd probably have to stick with the Billy's since it seems to be the only one I could find that's higher than 5 feet by default. With the the double Billy and an extension I could fit 1000 discs in almost the same space width, which would work out great. I need all the space I can unfortunately, since I have to leave room for expansion and shelving systems for 600+ laserdiscs as well in this small room.

Shit, is that really true? :( I went to Ikea a couple months ago to buy a couple and they didn't have any black ones in stock. I asked, and they said that more were coming in 3-4 weeks. I've been checking their website for availability and nothing yet. I even called a couple weeks ago and they said that more were on the way soon. I hope they aren't just making that up. Why would they get rid of such a popular and basic colour? I'm already pissed that they stopped making dark metallic grey shelves, especially since I already bought some a few years ago. Now nothing matches. :(

Yeah, I'm just going by the availability on their website and it seems that there is no color choice option at all for the single or double Billy's, other than white. I'm praying Black or at least Wood come back soon, as white would be my last choice.

Have you had some? Is the quality bad? Or just too modern for you?

How about the storage units at DDD? Anyone use the pre-assembled ones?

Mission style 298 dvd

A friend has the Mission cabinet with glass doors and it is quite nice. Might pick up a couple of these during the sale.
