Sony KD-34XBR960 HDTV Help!

My parents just got the Sony KD-34XBR960 HDTV. I set it up for them today but I can't seem to get the split picture or the idex channel to work (when you are able to flip through the cannels on the right and have a bigger pic of the channel you are watching on the left) They have the tivo sattelite receiver that receives dual outputs from the dish. The directions say split one of the dish wires and run one to the dish receiver and the other to the cable input on the TV. This dosent work, would I need another receiver to run the split screen and the index?

Also one other quick question is what is the advantage of hooking up video to your AV receiver and then running the video output on the receiver to the TV input? Right now I have all video going directly from all the components to the TV, is this bad?

Yes or use a tuner form another source.

IMHO, none. The only benefit to running video through a receiver is to allow for switching. I always run video straight from the source to the display wherever possible to minimize signal loss.

And, you can't just "split" the satellite wires. You have to use a special device called a multiswitch to do this. If they ever get a 2nd receiver this will matter. Those directions are absolute fiction.

Also, PIP/POP may only work if you use one HD connection and one SD connection. Or possibly 2 SD connections only. Each TV model is different, you'll have to check how the PIP works specifically. On mine, for instance, I cannot do PIP from component and digital connections at the same time. One of the sources always has to be Svideo/composite.
