Panasonic DMR-E85H Problems

I've had my DVD recorder for almost a year and lately the high-speed dubbing fails about half-way through (around 55/100). I've been using Memorex and TDK DVD-R's. Should I use a laser cleaner or is it time to get a new DVR? I also have a e80h that will not dub at all. Any advice is welcomed.

Not sure if this pertains to you, but there are a few issues that are well known regarding these units:

1. If you do a lot of editing it's recommended that one clean/reformat the HD every now and again to prevent corruption. If your HD is pretty full, this could also explain some of the issues you're experiencing. Personally, I empty programs stored on the HD to RAM and reformat every now and again.

2. The Panny's are well known to be sticklers for certain brands of media. I never use anything but high-quality TY's and Ritek's, so I rarely ever encounter an issue with failed burns.

BTW, the warrenty is for a full year. If you can't figure out the problem, I'd give Panny a call.

Thanks. I've always used TDK and Memorex. I have done a ton of dubbing and editing with this unit so maybe a format is in order. Last night, I was able to dub what I needed saved using the normal 1x dubbing method. Maybe I have just overused it and now the problems start.

I have this unit also, but I haven't encountered any problems other than the player freezing every once in a while (when I want to eject a dvd, never during playing). Here's a non-technologically savvy question: How does one reformat the hard drive?

Under the setup otions you have the option to Format drive. I was able to high speed dub some single entries but not multiple ones. I'm dubbing off the stuff that i want to save then I'm going to try formatting. I tried to normal dub some stuff and the unit stopped and 'SELF CHECK' appeared in the display.

I thought the format option was in the setup options but apparently not.

Well, I formatted and then I dubbed some old home movies. I tried to dub the movies in XP onto a disc and it started for 30 seconds and then the display said "BYE" and the unit shut off. Then "SELF CHECK" appeared and it was the same-old crap. I'm glad I bought a new DMR-EH50S.

Sorry to hear that a reformat didn't do the job, although, it's usually recommended that these reformats take place prior to significant issues cropping up. You can easily throw another HD in these, but since you're unsure as to whether or not that's the problem issue, I'd recommend you go ahead and give Panny a call. As I stated earlier, the coverage on the unit is valid for a year.
