Interlaced/Progressive DVD's?

Hey all,

Really simple question...

I have a Malata and when I push "info" on the DVD's, it will say either Interlaced or Progressive on certain discs. Is there a difference? What changes it between both of these?
The discs for both are showing up as 16x9.

Just curious...

DVDs are manufactured in interlaced form. I find it curious that the player would give different indications.

Perhaps it's a flag indicator, maybe for film vs video source?

It's almost ALWAYS showing "progressive." However, I've had a few discs that didn't look so hot and when I looked, it always said "interlaced."

I agree with X. It is probably something partly unrelated to interlaced vs progressive. Malata isn't exactly a champion of translating into English. The players have different modes for video or film material, or if they can read the progressive flags properly, this info screen may just be relating one of those modes.

Maybe it's an indication of whether it's outputting progressive or interlaced. The player may not be capable of converting some badly flagged DVDs to progressive and leaves them in interlaced form

Could be. Most players don't have an auto-switch for interlaced/progressive, though. You generally have to pick one manually.

The Malata does something else funky, too, at least my older N996 does, not sure which one we're discussing here. I think it may actually de-interlace to progressive to do all its video adjustments and then goes BACK to interlaced for output if its set to interlaced. Not sure about this, but the Secrets review some time ago mentioned something about it.
