Rear surround speaker placement near ceiling

I basically need to know if i place my rear surround speakers near the ceiling pointed down in the direction of my viewing spot, will it give me the same sound as if i put them directly opposite of my ears (4/5 feet from the ground)? which placement is better, or does it matter?

I am going to run into this same problem with a new house I'm building. The prewires that I got as an option are on the ceiling in the front and back of the house. Not very conducive to my situation. I don't have much add to this thread, other than to say I'm in a similar situation.

I experimented with the setups a while back I tried them in both positions (sides and above rear and could not tell a difference. Since that was the case, I decided to go for looks and place them above rear. Sounds and works great.

Both locations will cahieve the same effect. Bascially, preference takes over at this point. Some actually like them facing up, that way it will bounce back down.... if you can hear it, it works..... the rest is up to you.

I speak from experience,

I'm not sure what you mean by "pointed down in the direction of my viewing spot". But here is a diagram from Dolby that may give you an idea, note that they recommend a 90 to 110 degree angle towards the listening postion. But as mentioned, experiment and see what you like. Also unless you have super high ceilings, I would not "point them down". With most movies I like the surround effects to be "around/behind" me rather then "right at me". A good example is in Matrix II when the dude with the keys is running down the hall and doors are slamming open. If I point my speakers at the listening area the doors seem to hit me, but if I return them pointing straight ahead towards each other (90 degrees), the doors seem to stay behind me as the guy runs. In other words it seems to have more depth to the sound, when my surrounds are truely at 90 degrees and not point down. But experiment and see what you really like.
