Frequently there never was anything wrong with refurbished items. Once it's opened, if it's returned for any reason an authorized dealer is supposed to send it back to the manufactuer, who checks it to make sure it works properly, then seals it up and sells it as refurbished.
I've owned a number of refurbs from various manufacturers that have all performed (and lasted as long) as new. It's important to be certain the refurbs are coming from the manufacturer, however. I would never buy a service contract on a <$50 VCR. Even if it craps out, making a claim and shipping the item and waiting weeks for it to come back wouldn't be worth the cost, to me. But I sup[pose if it was going to be in constant use I might gamble the $10, assuming the service contract came from a reputable vendor that wouldn't weasel out on the guarantee. RichC |
