Do most American DVD players do PAL & NTSC now?
Somebody was telling me that most of the newer models of American DVD players will play PAL format as well as NTSC - is that true? I thought our hardware was strictly NTSC unless you go the specialty player route.

I don't know that I would say MOST but definitely lots more than there used to be. Common would perhaps be a better term. Many players under $300, regardless of the brand, are built in China now and are distributed around the world under different model #s. Because of this more and more players are PAL/NTSC compatible and have region coding done by firmware instead of being hardwired into it.

Most of the new Panasonics will output a PAL signal. Your S47 probably will output a PAL signal, but your RP82 probably won't output a PAL signal. However, they will not convert PAL to NTSC. I don't know about your PS2.

When I bought my JVC RX-DV3 DVD/Surround system, I did not know it would play other regions until about 3 months later (read about it on the internet). So I popped in my R2 "The Scarlet Pimpernel" DVD, and it played just fine with no changes to my JVC player.

Is there anyway I can find out for certain if my S47 will do PAL? I'm trying to decide about purchasing a region-free PAL DVD.

According to this site the S47 doesn't convert PAL...they've been pretty reliable when i've looked up players...
