Widescreen DVDs on widescreen TV

We just bought a Mitsubishi 65" 16:9 Widescreen Projection TV. This may be a stupid question, but when somebody asked me today why the widescreen DVD doesn't fill up the whole screen on the widescreen TV, I really didn't have an answer. Can someone enlighten me?
