I got some BB credit for christmas. I was looking at getting a new DVD player w/ DVI output that upconverts to 1080i to go along with my new Mitsui HDTV. Is the picture that much better than a regular dvd player? Is it worth the $200 upgrade (especially when I already have a DVD player that works just fine)?

You might do a search in this forum for the diverse opinions on that.

I have read some of those threads. That's why I'm on the fence. I'd like a nicer picture, but if the difference in PQ not a huge leap (say from regular broadcast TV in comparison to a DVD) I don't think it's worth it.

I have a Mist. 55" HDTV and a Samsung HD-931. There is a noticable improvement in the picture - but it's not an overwhelming improvement. I've always been happy with my investment in the player, but it really depends on how picky you are about picture quality. One interesting note...the DVI cord that came with my HD-931 wasn't long enough to reach from the top of the TV (where I put the player) to the input in the back of my Mist...so I did invest another $100 to get a longer cable!

Shannon said it very well.

It depends on how picky you are of your picture. I noticed an improvement switching to the Samsung HD-931 on my DLP.

Might as well pick one up and see if you like the improvement. If not, you can always return it.

That may be what I'll do. I'm not hugely picky on PQ. DVDs look good, but once you watch true HD content, going back to DVD makes me yearn for better PQ from DVDs. Maybe I'll just wait until the HD-DVD stuff shakes out and upgrade then.

Thanks for the help guys.
