BB has too good of deal to pass up right now. No interest on any TV purchase until January 2007. So, I am in the market to pick up a nice TV. I'm still not sold on DLP or LCD sets. I'm leaning towards a projection TV. Help talk me out of of something or talk me into something.

Hey Defftones,

My .02 I bought a RP CRT almost 2 years ago and I am still quite happy with it. It is in a fairly bright room but I have countered that by taking off the glare shield. Having the shield off allows me to watch the TV even with a lot of ambient light in the room.

my buddy who bought a DLP this summer was surprised at how nice the pic was with this dinosaur CRT technology.

I am leaning towards a 65" Toshiba RPT or a 65" Mitsubishi. There are positives and negatives about both. Still trying to decide.

I have a Toshiba 57" RPTV and love it. I have heard good reviews for the Mits as well, so I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Your set selection probably depends most on what you primarily watch -- TV or DVD.

I agree with taa455. you can't go wrong with either. FWIW I have a Mits WS65511. The only thing I wish my set had is a copy compliant input (HDMI/DVI). It looks more and more like HDMI/DVI will be the choice for HD-DVD in the future.

Whichever one you get, make sure you turn down the contrast and brightness when you get it home because most RPTVs are set in torch mode out of the box. Or better yet, get DVE or AVIA to callibrate

I think you can go wrong with Toshiba if you primarily watch DVD. Most models need to convert all 480p signals to its native internal 540p and create artifacts.

I heard something about Toshiba releasing new 65 and 71 models that don't have that problem but I'd make sure before I bought one if I watched a decent amount of DVD and really cared about the picture. A player that upconverted to 1080i would get around that problem as well.

I watch hundreds of DVDs and I've never noticed.

Edit: I admit I am no expert.

More TV than DVD at this point in time. I'd say I watch about 20 hours of TV for every DVD I watch.


X, what about if I got a progressive scan DVD player? That would seem to make some difference, right?


The reason why I am leaning toward the Toshiba: Smaller, about 90 pounds lighter, can break into 2 sections for easier transport.

Plus, on BB's website, if you order through them you can get a VCR/DVD-R writer w/ any TV purchase over $1399. You can't buy the Mitsubishi's online through BB. There is a $300 MIR on the Mitsubishi to bring the price down to $1999, but that is only instore. I did the math, and with the free shipping (something I'd have to pay for with instore purchase), I will only have to pay $150 more for the Toshiba w/ the VCR/DVD-R burner. I have been planning convert my parents old home movies to DVD-R for some time now, so it just seems to good of deal to pass up.

I just looked. The freebie VCR/DVD-R is progressive scan, preventing me from having to buy another player. Unless someone can talk me out of this w/ some major issue, I am going to pull the trigger on this probably by Wednesday.

I will say that Toshiba's stretch mode for 4:3 TV is excellent.

Nope, not unless it puts out 540p. I heard some rumors about Toshiba putting out one that did (probably for just this problem) but don't have any details.

Progressive generally just puts out 480p instead of 480i. The upconverting players will put out 1080i which would give you what you need as long as the interface between the units is correct.

According to the Toshiba website it states this: CrystalScan HDSC™ (All time 1080i) with User Selectable 540p.

Is that what you are talking about X?

Not exactly. But it does seem to be showing that it only has 1080i or 540p.

I have last years model Mitsubishi 65413 and love it. I got it at a great price in February from Sears. I took off the screen protector to eliminate the glare.

I believe the Mitsubishi should come apart in 2 pieces, as well. I know mine is supposed to.

Like X says any brand and model that doesn't display 480 progressive as it's native display has the possibility to show upconversion artifacts. Actually I think Mits is the only brand that still does display 480p natively. Also the 65" Mits also separates into two halves for delivery into tight areas. Tosh will convert 480i/p to your choice of 540p or 1080i for display but 720p and 1080i HD will only display at 1080i I believe.
