best speakers at various prices?

my uncle has just gotten a new tv and wants to get some speakers to go with it. it's a 65" LCD so he will be watching movies on it as well as tv. i am not sure how much he is willing to spend, he just asked me if i could investigate some speakers for him. it's been so long since i bought mine, i am not up on what's good now. does anyone have any suggestions on good speakers? probably in the ranges of below $400, $400-700, $700-1000?

thanks.

Here are some vendors that get recommendations here all the time:

NHT, B&W, Polk, Paradigm, Energy.

There are also several online vendors however, I am a big believer in listening critically to any speaker before purchase.

Try doing a forum search as well.

As mentioned in other topics, the Onkyo 770 for $499 seems to be a bargain for a 6.1 system.

You can certainly go up from there. I use RBH speakers and love them.

Brian is right though, best to try to listen to some. Circuit City has many set up and although its not the best of acoutics, it will give you some idea of what's what. Stay away from their Bose recommendations though.

(thanks DVD Josh, I forgot it was 6.1, not 5.1)

Just for the record, the Onkyo is a 6.1 system.

The problem is speakers at a given price are more alike then different. Plus each person likes different things .

To say one brand is globally better then another is also a problem. In this industry many engineers move from brand to brand. So if that designer made a great speakers for brand A then left to another Brand B. Would the reputation move with the designer or the brand.

Bottom line is go listen with music you know. Then make sure you can return what you buy because many time it will be different sounding in your home.

Does he already have a receiver or does he need that also? That will have to figure into the equation if he needs that also.

Defintately. Don't forget to add Klipsch to an already good mix. Even in two channel mode, these speakers throw a very good wide dispersed front soundstage. For the record, this is from a Paradigm owner.

If he's spent his last dime on a monitor (which is seems he has knowing DLP prices at that size), with Klipsch and a few others, he could avoid an expensive surround sound receiver/speaker set up and not lose a good amount of enjoyment. A bag in a box (HTIB) is just not that rewarding even when considering the cost.

If he doesn't mind online speakers Axiom Audio speakers have a great selection for the prices as well as custom finishes. If you check out some other forums and their forums as well you will get a sense that their customer service is excellent. They also have a great return policy so you won't have to worry about getting stuck with something you are not happy with.
