I need DVDtalk help going Region Free and getting a dvd recorder for my TIVO

Sorry for the long thread title, but I wanted to make sure everyone knew what they were getting from this thread. I started this thread as a spin off from my posts in the Spaced thread over in the dvd talk section.

First off, everyone tells me to go Region Free, since it's cheap and easy. So here's what I'm looking for: A dvd player I can hook up and watch a dvd from any region, PAL or NTSC, without much trouble. I'm not very technically minded, so I don't know how good I would be at "hacking" something. I'd like a dvd player that has Dolby Digital and DTS, and that will play PAL discs without the "stretching" I hear about. So am I dreaming, or does a "perfect" player like this exist?

Secondly, we've got a Directivo (love it) and we'd like to be able to record some of our shows from it onto dvds. Never used a dvd recorder before, so I'm not sure how it works. Do you get to go in and program chapter stops? Or is it just like a vcr, where you start it recording and stop when it gets to the end? I am seriously ignorant about this matter, so I'm looking for your help.

We're thinking about upgrading our home theater for Christmas, and these are two additions we would really enjoy. A region free player for me, and DVD recorder for her. Thanks again, DVDtalk.

Well, if you are looking for cheap and easy, check this thread in the international forum.

A member of my girlfriend's family bought the Daewoo that is mentioned in that thread at Target for $50 and it plays everything I have thrown at it (both PAL and NTSC).
