Refurbs

I was wondering if anybody could share their experience(s) with refurbs. I'm looking at getting a HK 230 new, but for about 20$ more I can get a 330 refurb with 2 yrs coverage and I'm a little torn as what to do.

Many people will post that you should go with the refurb. Some people on here swear by them and see them as a great way of saving money. I'm not one of those people. I've bought refurb 3 times, and each time I've always ended up wishing I hadn't. I don't buy them anymore. I avoid them like the plague.

Sometimes 'refurb' means nothing more than wiping the dust off of something. Even when something has to pass a spec check, the ranges it must be in can be awfully wide and not necessarily how the manufacturer would want it new, even when buying it refurbed from the manufacturer! Even if it passes all tests with flying colors, there are annoying problems that don't get checked for. Like that sticky button on the panel that will cause you grief almost everytime you use the item. Watch out for the 2 year warranty coverage too, usually you're trusting the same people to repair it that said it was good to go in the first place. It sounds good but can end up being quite useless.

So, if you want a 330, save up the extra cash and buy a new 330. That's my advice.

I have a AVR320 I bought Refub and I have no complaints. As Renaldow stated some people sear by them while others swear at them. I would say do it. So now you have a 1:1 response which puts you back in your original position, sorry for the help.

I have a refurb Onkyo HT receiver and speakers. Have never had a problem with them and I saved hundreds of dollars by buying them refurbed.

Looks like it's 2:1 now, so maybe that will help sway him? Gotta give it to Mopower for having the balls to buy refurbed speakers. That takes guts, but I suppose it saves you from having to go through any kind of break in period with them. They're just the one component I would never dream about buying refurbed because so much could be/or go wrong with them.

I bought a refurb Onkyo HTS760 and it has a bad infared sensor, but it wouldn't stop me from buying another refurb in the future.

I only buy a refurb if it has full warranty and saves me 20% or more off the new price.

Well I ended up going with it and it "should" arrive tomorrow, though I can't say for sure. Hopefully I'll have a chance to hook it up and see what it sounds like, but my current circumstances may prevent that for a while.
