HDTV with DVD Recorder questions

I'm getting an HDTV dish, I only have one component input available on my HDTV. I noticed there are now some DVD recorders with component inputs( philips DVDR615 ), my question is. Can I hook the DVD player into the component input on the TV, and then plug the dish into the DVD recorder and be able to watch the dish even when not recording, will the picture be degraded. Can you record HD onto a dvd recorder with components in. This was a common set up with VCRs back in the day, i wondered if it works the same with dvd players? I never noticed a TV/VIDEo button.

I can't say for certain since I don't own one but I'm pretty sure a DVD recorder's inputs will only accept a SD signal. This would mean that even if you're not recording to DVD that the recorder wouldn't even pass though the HD signal to the TV.
