Which is the best HT in a box now?

Well, that is the question. I know that the Onkyo 760 is a very good option but its the best HT in a box now?

Another good option in performance/price in the same range?

Users of the 760: any suggestions, problems or recomendations?

Mopower 07-09-04 03:13 PM

Anything by Onkyo. Look at the refurbs at the Onkyo website. I bought one for hundreds less that new and have had zero problems with it.

catracho 07-10-04 11:47 AM

Yes, Onkyo is a good option but Its the best option now?

First of all, this is a very subjective question. Best to me might mean differently to you. Price, size, aesthetics all factor into it.

I have a "modified" Onkyo system - I upgraded the HT760's receiver to the 502 and am using a different sub. I think it's fantastic for the price.

I also looked at the Yamaha HTIB (HTR5760 I believe). It's very nice. Same price.

You'll do well with either. It's up to you.

Thanks DVD Josh, my question is about performance/price. The Onkyo system has very good reviews but its an old system now. Maybe Onkyo or another company has a new system that replace the 760 in terms of performance/price.

I don't have it myself, just passing word - noticed that Circuit City has the 760 in their ad today for $399 after instant savings and a $50 rebate.

The 770 has replaced the 760. Increased power from 100w to 130w and subwoofer from 8" to 10" cone. Check www.onkyo.com for specs.

You can go to the website and select "dealer & service locator".

The 760 is $399 from Crutchfield.com with $10 shipping...

For the small size of my room, I'll be going with the 660 for my first home theater system. Looks like it'll do the job with smaller speakers than the 760 and I'll hopefully be able to convince my girlfriend that it's A Good Thing. :)

catracho 07-13-04 10:16 AM

What is the different between 660 and 760? Only the size of the speakers?

Another question to tack on:
Anybody have or used the DVD player that comes with the 777 set? It's a DV-CP702.

Generally, Onkyo DVD players are subpar. You'd be better off putting the additional money into a Sony or similar changer. It's a multiremote, so you can just program in a Sony code, no problem.

Naw... the 760 is a 6.1 receiver and bigger speakers, while the 660 is only 5.1. For my purposes, 5.1 is fine, though. It's a small room, but I WANT surround sound, dammit! ;)

I just picked up a refurb 760 from ecost.com for 199 plus 140 shipping. I got it in 3 days, and hooked it up over the weekend. Sounds excellent, although I haven't fully calibrated it yet.

Seems they still have three left at ecost as well if anyone's interested.

Brand new 760 for $399 including shipping. $60 more than above deal, but it has full 2yr/2yr warranty instead of 2yr/90day warranty.

not to rain on a threads parade but .....

I have bought many HTIB setups, many. mainly cause I wanted it now.

I didn't listen to anyone but myself. finally I bought a nice set of fronts to start out after being so disappointed with my 3 HTIB purchases. I wish I bought my Paradigm Monitor 7 speakers along time ago and built from there.

lesson: a nice set of fronts angled correctly can get an image that will blow away almost any HTIB speaker set.

just some advice guys. I would have saved alot of money If I did it right the first time. now I have the matching center and a nice SVS sub to round it out and JBL rears. the first time I have been happy with a setup I bought.

DVD Josh 07-20-04 06:48 AM

Bru, you totally miss the whole point of this thread. Not only that, you paid about three times as much as any HTIB mentioned here.

Bru 07-30-04 08:29 AM

no , I dint miss the point.

you hear people saying they even upgraded the reciever ?

my point is that if you build slow and buy quality you will get more life out of your system and more pleasure.

trust me. people upgrade and growing out of a HTUB will happen quickly if you are serious about this hobby. your ears will out grow the system fast.

just trying to help. but I am sure you will figure it out on your own.

good luck.

Personally, I recommend the Denon 684. Very heavy duty, separate components, and loud as hell, with pinpoint clarity.

Also, check out the HTIB forum here: www.avsforum.com
