PAL-Compatible DVD Player Advice

I was hoping that some of you have had experience with playing PAL DVD's.
I'm in Australia, but looking to buy an American friend a DVD player that will be able to play DVDs I send over.

Can anyone with experience recommend me a player to do this. (in the lower range of the price scale if possible)
