Help!! Some HD comingin 4/3, some in 16/9?

Hello to all.

I am confused on why some of the shows including my local baseball on WGN is 4/3 at times and other times it is 16/9.

Is this a common problem?

Also some of my shows have more crowd noise than announcer noise on sports.

Thanks to all who respond

Beau

What model HD receiver and display device do you have?

I've noticed the same thing. I'm using ComCast for my HD programming. I'm pretty sure it depends on how they broadcast it. The picture can be broadcasted in 4:3 and still be in HD. I've also noticed that when the sound is noticably louder, between different broadcasts, the louder broadcast is usually Dolby Pro Logic. Just some things I noticed; hope it helps.

If it's 4:3 then it's not HD. Even though the program may be on the digital channel, it doesn't have to be HD.

I am using the Samsung T- 160 HD rec. Panasonic 47WX53 T.V.
I have the setting for them both at 16/9.

It usually happens on my local WGN station when I am picking up the signal OTA. It says HD on the guide and on the top of the channel itself.

The Whitesox game on Sunday and Reba on Friday said "HD", but were both in 4/3.

Thanks, Beau

It depends on how it is being broadcast - just because you are tuning in to an HD channel doesnt mean you are getting an HD broadcast - the network has to be broadcasting that particular event in HD in order for you to receive it in HD - personally I think its a copout - everything should be simulcast in std and HD and anything over the HD channel receiver should be full 16:9 HD quality - we're paying wnough to have the damn box and the service and I feel like Im grabbing my ankles when I see 4:3 STD def on my HD channels.

I also was wondering why the Cubs game a few weeks ago was not in HD when every other game this year has been.

Yes, I was watching it on the ESPN HD channel.

Sorry I don't have much to add. ESPN HD is the absolute worst of my HD channels from Direct TV.

As for your problem I know that I once had a conflict with my settings on my receiver and my projector. Try going through your receiver settings to see if that changes the problem.
