Rear Projection TVs <$2000

What's on your short list? Widscreen version wanted, not 4:3.

Pioneer 64" 643hd5 $1999 at Costco (if you can still find it) - end of list.

Check out Home Theater SPOT in both the Pioneer and RPTV forums for loads of feedback.

I'd stay away from open box RPTVs. They probably will have burn in.

How big do you want? Look at Hitachi's S line - a little more than $2K, but I love mine

I have read a lot of good things about the Pioneer at Costco. I just saw one at Costco in N. Dallas.

Also I have read where CRT RPTV's benefit greatly from professional setup/tunning. Checking out the home theater web forums seems to indicate that on the Pioneer it would run about $400 or so. But of course YMMV.

I'm not sure on size, but the room is 20 x 25 if that helps. DVI, I looked at the Panasonic sight and it seems it has DVI.

Ok, you will need to repost the link, maybe with spaces between the naughty website so it won't be censored.

20 x 25' is a huge room. You probably can't buy a RPTV too big assuming your viewing distance is 13-14' or so. I'm at 100" (projection) at an 11' viewing distance.

The Toshiba 65HX83 is probably a good choice in your price range.

I got it confused with my garage. It's actually 15 x 19, so a tad smaller. I'm thinking something in the 50-57 inch. How about that Pioneer at Walmart.com?

svadas, is this the one you are talking about at wal-mart?

If so I was kinda looking at that myself. Seems like a decent price too.

The SD-533HD5? Not a bad choice. I'd probably prefer the 57HX83 to it though.

How much more is the 57HX83 though? I've also seen people rave about the Hitachi's S series. Then there's still Panasonic and Toshiba out there. I'm interpretting that DVI is more of a copy protection scheme than a feature. Any comments?

I've also got a finished basement that I toy of puting a projector in, but I've only got one set of receiver/speaker etc and those are $$$ to duplicate. Such is life.

About $1550 plus shipping or so (no tax though).

DVI is a feature, a good one
HDCP is a copy protection scheme

Having HDCP compliant DVI is nice on a display. I'm regretting not having it on my $10k projector.

The hitachi S series is very nice.

DVI will give you a purely digital picture when watching HD. Component is still analog. Great analog, but still analog.

I got a Hitachi 51S700 for < $2000. The TV has been great for the past 4 months. VERY tweakable and an excellent picture. It has DVI, and a built in HD Tuner.

Paying extra for a built-in tuner is a very bad idea, in my opinion.

I'll second the recommendation of one of the TVs in the Toshiba HX83 line.

Yes but any CRT based HDTV is still analog. The signal it receives may be digital but the TV converts the signal to analog for display. HDTVs like LCD, DLP, Plasma and LCoS are digital all the way through to display so DVI benefits them more than CRT based sets.

I agree, but it actually cost me less to buy the version with the built in tuner. The typical $200-$300 price increase for models with a built in HD tuner is not worth it. I got the Hitachi 51S700 for for about $150 less than the 51S500. It was a complicated transaction at Sears involving price matching and rebates.
