does 3:2 pulldown matter with older TV?
 

Did a search and didn't find a clear answer.

I understand the 3:2 pulldown concept but I'm still not clear on whether it's of any value to have it in a DVD player if it will only be connected to an older TV.
I'm very happy with my Sony TV but it has direct (composite) video inputs, no component (RGB) inputs. So I can't use progressive scan.

Is 3:2 pulldown only functional in progressive scan mode or is a setting that is independent of progressive scan? In other words, would the 3:2 pulldown feature in a DVD player make any difference on my older, composite video in only, conventional interlace TV.

Yes, from what I read, it seems to be a feature tied to the progressive scan mode but.....

It seems to me that once the 3:2 pulldown is applied, it would be possible to reprocess it back to interlace at the interlace frame rate so it could link up at 1:1. At least from what I understand of the techno-babble, it could be done. Thought some players might have this feature, but maybe it's too expensive and/or they don't think it's worth applying to the older non-progressive scan video format.
