Is there a PVR that does NOT need phone line and/or is not TIVO or Replay?
I use my cell phone as my primary phone (no land line) and would like to have a PVR that works exactly like a VCR. I don't want/need a subscription based service. I don't want to be locked into a TIVO or Replay type of monthly service either. I have DirectTV and a Sony Sat receiver with VCR control.
I've often thought of building one HTPC-like to do this but I'd rather have a PVR without having to do so.
Thanks!

EDIT: no DVD recorders.

I'm not sure about the newer pvr's but I know the older tivos would let you just manually set times for it to record, but it did have to set the clock over a phone line.. so if the power went out you had to let it dial again and get the correct time..

RCA makes one with a built in dvd player. It uses the guide + system which is those codes in the tv guide. I think they used to make a standalone model, but I coulndt find anything. check it out here:

ps-RCA doesnt seem to have a good reptation for good build quality the last few years. It may be cheaper and less problematic in the long run to buy a tivo or replaytv.
