Subwoofer questions

I need some help from an audiophile. Just got my first real sound system with Polk speakers & subwoofer. I bought an AR subwoofer cable to hook it up to the receiver. But when I opened everything up, I noticed that the subwoofer cable was one jack to one jack, but the input on my sub was two jacks.

I plugged the jack into the L input and it seems to work fine. Is this setup problematic for any reason? Am I losing sound this way? I seem to have plenty of bass.

Also, should I be turning the subwoofer off when it's not being used, or is it okay to just leave it on?

My receiver only has one (mono) sub output and my sub has l/r inputs. The sub actually indicates one input for mono although I don't know if it makes a difference. I don't think you should have any trouble. As I understand, bass is basically mono since it is not directional. Maybe someone else can provide a full explanation.

I use the auto on/off on my sub. It works quite well. Does yours only have on/off?

If your receiver has a switched outlet on it, you may be able to plug the sub into that. If that is a bad idea, hopefully someone can comment.

Yes, the sub's signal is mono. It doesn't matter which input you plug into, but some sub companies say one is better than the other. The auto on/off is fine. Here's some good info on subs.
