More (stupid) questions about 3:2 pulldown

1. Does progressive scan == 3:2 pulldown? I can't find a definitive answer on this, and while I see DVD players advertised as progressive scan, I see few advertised with 3:2 pulldown -- even ones that I know do it.

2. It is my impression that both the television and the DVD player must be capable of 3:2 pulldown for it to work. However, I'm getting people telling me that only one needs to do it -- but one may do it better than the other. This is a big deal to me, because my television is capable. If I don't have to worry about a capable DVD player, that would be nice.

1. Yes they're basicly the same. Anything that does progressive scan will also have 3:2 pulldown to deal with both film and video frame rates.

2. If you own a TV that does it then it will do it for any SD signal fed into it and you really don't need a DVD player that has it since the TV will convert it when it's fed a 480i signal. However many people feel that it's wise to invest in a progressive scan DVD player with better deinterlacing than the TV so that DVDs look their best. So a Pro scan player is not needed but if you get one of the more expensive and better deinterlacing ones it will make a difference compared to what the TV can do.

I should note that all of what I said in number 2 above only pertains to displays that can show 480p natively IMO. If you own a display that upconverts 480p to some other res like 540p, 720p or 1080i then don't bother since you won't being seeing the benefits of the pro scan player.
