1080i or 480p?
Well I just got a new DVD player that can play either 480p or 1080i on my Toshiba CW34X92 HDTV-Ready TV. I was wondering which one is the best mode? When I switch between 1080i and 480p on my DVD player, you can tell a difference. Not really a HUGE this one is better than the other difference, but it's different. In 1080i, it seems a little less "colorful" yet more "realistic." In 480p, it's colorful but it looks like a normal DVD.

Not really sure. All I know is that my DVD player has a button where you can switch between different resolutions. I tried 720p, but my TV does not support that. Another thing, when I have it on 1080i, the subtitles look really blurry.

I can switch my HTPC between the two resolutions. I find that 480p looks sharper with less shimmering. However many people seem to like the 1080i look so I'm going to do some more testing.

assuming you have a set that can resolve 1080i... any native 1080i source should look far superior than one in 480p. after all, 480p isn't even high definition. however, considering almost all dvds have 480i lines of resolution you have to look to see what kind of upconversion is going on. a poorly upconverted 480i to 1080i signal won't look as good as a well done 480i to 480p upconversion. once HD dvd arrives (assuming 1080i is the format) this question should no longer be an issue.

Upscaling a 480p signal to 1080i is not the same thing as making it true high definition. All you are doing is filling in the spaces between pixels by duplicating those pixels. Some scalers do a better job of this than others. You just have to test it out both ways and see which you prefer on your display. From the sounds of it, your DVD player does a good job overall but cannot handle subtitled material.
