Question about DVD/VCR combos

What's the verdict about DVD/VCR combos? Good or bad? I ask because I'm the source for DVD info at my workplace, and when some of my "older" friends ask me about what to buy for their first player, I'm at a loss. Usually they ask because their VCR crapped out or they can't find VHS to rent, but they still want to watch the occaisional VHS or home movie. My opinion right now is that a dedicated player is better, and the two components don't integrate well and I discourage combos. Have they gotten better since I bought my DVD player 4 years ago? Is there a reliable combo out there? I'd like to be a reliable source of info, more so than some floor associate at ratshack. Thanks.

I suppose if someone needs to watch vhs and is more concerned with space or functionality combo's may be ok.

IMHO they have far more disadvantages.

If one thing goes wrong you are out both pieces.
I have never seen a high(er) end combo.
Depending on the display being fed I would be far more concerned with the dvd playback and features, vhs is going to look poor on a high quality display anyway.
