question on 185:1 & 2:35:1

I was wondering how come when I put the Pianist in my
dvd player it looks like a 2:35.1 aspect ratio on a widescreen
tv??

The back of the dvd box says the movie is 185:1 anamorphic
widescreen.

Does that mean that it won't perfectly fit the 16:9 TV
because of the "anamorphic" thing?

I thought 185:1 was 16:9 perfectly and that 235:1 would still
have the black bars underneath it. Not both aspect ratios.

THANKS to anyone who can help this novice.

I thought 185:1 was 16:9 perfectly
Now how could 1.85:1 fit 16:9 perfectly? Think about it. 16:9 = 1.78:1. Simple arithmetic. 1.85:1 movies will not completely fill a 16:9 widescreen set.

Does the image look vertically squished? Are people all short and squat? It sounds like you have not told your DVD player that you have a widescreen TV. You need to go into the player's set-up menu and change it to 16:9 mode.

The movie should be 1.85:1. It should nearly fill your widescreen TV, with small black bars at the top and bottom.
