Funny, I was wondering about this just the other day.
I've got my $300 lappy (courtesy of Staples from back in January) hooked up semi-permanently to our HT for just this purpose.....

An awesome site that can answer virtually ALL of your questions on topics like this is VCDHelp.com .
This site tells you how to convert/burn multiple files formats to CDR in order to get them to play in your DVD player. It also has a huge matrix of DVD players and tells you which players are compatible with what media. It will have everything you need!!!
Hope this helps.

I realized after I posted that I meant a DVD player for avi's and UNENCODED mpeg's. Pretty much: DL the file, burn it as a data file, and throw it into a set-top player.
Then I realized the futility of that with so many different codecs need to play them..........

By .avi I assume you mean DivX.
If so the only DVD players I've heard of are the KiSS DP-450 and DP-500, which I'm not even sure if they have been released in the US yet. The DP-500 even includes an Ethernet port for direct downloading to the DVD player.

Yeah, I tried converting an Xvid .avi file. I got it burned to my CD using Easy CD creator 5.0, but when I tried to play it, the picture was UPSIDE DOWN??!?!???? Does anyone know why is this?

You're using a trial version of the software, I presume? To correct your problem, you must buy the licensed software from the developer.

Would SVCD make any difference, or probably not?
