Ok, I'll admit it....
I'm a newbie to this Home theater business and I'll admit that I don't know a whole lot about it. Mostly just the basics. I'm a college boy so a big budgit theater is out of the question but I was thinking I would slowly piece on together. Maybe this summer just get the receiver, center and towers. Any suggestions on some good starting equipment that would keep the cost 1,000-1,200 or so?

I would start with a good 27" flatscreen TV and a decent DVD player. Home Theater in a Box has come a long way so I would make that the next step, at least I would have a receiver and speakers, those can then be upgraded over time. Speaking for myself only, I would prefer a less expensive 5 or 6 speaker system than better speakers but no surround sound.

I agree with Jim. That is how I started. I replaced each piece bit by bit. The only items left are the two surrounds. The original speakers work pretty well as surrounds, so there is no hurry to replace those.
