defective subwoofer?

I dont have a lot of Subwoofer experience.
I have an Onkyo skw-110 150 watt downfiring sub '8

when i play any dvd with pretty low base ie (lord of the rings)
it starts creaking.. almost like its bottoming out(blown). I have to turn the sound volume way down to get it to stop creaking.
Does this mean the sub is blown? it sounds fine with other sources (radio and cd, TV) and at lower volume on DVD. Or is it just that the sub is poor quality and cant handle lower base at moderate volume levels.

Not familiar with that sub, but sounds like you hit the nail on the head in your last sentence. I don't know of very many subs with an 8" woof that can handle LOTR (or any other bass-heavy soundtrack, for that matter) at anything other then low volume levels.

does is sound like "CLACK" that is bottoming. Creaking noise a can not place, any more detail. Could it be port noise? The air in the port can chafe making a kind of whistling sound. It could also me amp clipping.

More details?

Did you get this as part of an Onkyo HTiB? The HT-650S perhaps? If so, there are known issues with the receiver having problem with certain aspects of the LFE. It can be fixed by a service center.

Threads over at the HTF suggest this sub rocks and can handle just about anything you throw at it.

Can you post a few timestops for me?
I'll let you know how mine sounds when it shows up on Thursday.

I actually got the sub by itself from Onkyo, it's refurbished.. but looks brand new. I have it connected to a SD 6109C integrated dvd/receiver. I guess its sort of a clanking noise when the base gets really low. I'll try to play with it tonight and see if i can get more details.
