What is broadcast on HDTV OTA for ordinary TV shows?

I just got an HDTV, HDTV tuner, and UHF antenna, with which I can pull in 3 over the air tv channels. Can someone tell me what kind of signal I am pulling in this way? My understanding was that only a handful of shows are "in HDTV". Am I wrong? If I'm right, does the HDTV channel show any better picture than I would get through ordinary TV and my line doubler?

Thanks for any clarification.

Except for PBS, most of the major national broadcasters send their HDTV and Analog signal at the same time (simulcast).

For regular shows (non hdtv source, etc), and during non primetime hours, most of the material will be broadcast in 4:3 (black sidebars on the side).

For most primetime hours, most of the shows on the national broadcasters are broadcast in HD (which means they were recorded in HD or mastered up to HD). You should see no bars and you should see a noticable improvement in picture.

Thank you for the explanation. It leaves me curious about one thing: what does PBS do that is different than the others?

PBS-HD broadcasts are not a simulcast of their analog channel. It's mostly just beautiful scenery so you can conveniently showcase your HD display to those who haven't seen a true 1080i broadcast.

Now and then PBS does have some simulcasts of what is one the standard channels, though. They ran MANOR HOUSE in HDTV recently. Most of the time, at least in Las Vegas, it is just demo loops of scenery as you stated. Hopefully they'll start to show more programming in HD soon.

But occasionally, they do offer some really great HD programming.
