1280 x 720 vs. 1080i

Could someone clarify the different resolution settings. e.g. 480p, 720p or 1280 x 720 vs 1080i etc?

Thanks

Thanks -

I know that p is progressive and i is interlaced,
I hear that 720p is in some way comparable to 1080i- but I don't know why. Could you explain the difference?
