Give or take an extra $200 to $300 (no need to include DVD player). Your help is greatly appreciated.

I was thinking Onkyo. Any thoughts?
I saw an Onkyo at CC with speakers and sub. Does anyone recommend this setup?
Or can I go better quality? I can push $1500 and maybe $2000 with a lot of begging.

Around $1500 some options you might consider:
Speakers:
* Definitive technology procinema 80 ($900-$1000 w/ sub)
* NHT SuperZero (or SuperOne) + Super Center + SW10 Sub (or Def Tech or HSU VTF2 subs)
* PSB Alpha + any of above subs
Reveivers:
* Outlaw 1050 ($500)
* Harman Kardon 225 ($500)
* Denon 1803 (about $500)
At this price point I would seek out a specialty shop. While CC carries some decent receivers, IMO their speaker selection is lacking--you can do much better for the same money elsewhere.
Edited to add:
Regarding Onkyo...for every brand available there are people who love 'em and people who loath ‘em. I haven't spent enough time with the Onk 600 or 700 to offer an opinion on those models. I personally do not care for the sound of the 500--but there are plenty of people here who have and enjoy them. Sound is very personal.
Some advice. You really can’t tell how a piece of equipment sounds from a quick demo—especially at a place like CC or BB that features a “wall of sound”—you need to try components at home over an extended period to gain any meaningful insight.
