Why can't i find the Avia DVD anywhere?
I was planning on buying it during my lunch break. However after calling Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry's, no one seems to carry this disc anymore. I live in Burbank, and if someone could point me in the right direction i'd appreciate it.
I've also tried Blockbuster to see if could just rent it...

I've got a few listed on Half and Amazon. Are you looking that hard? Oh. Nevermind. You are looking locally. Just wait the few extra days for it to be shipped and you will save a few bucks on it. Unless you need to build a home theatre in the next 36 hours, it really isn't worth the extra $10 you would spend at Best Buy, if they even had it.

I had Video Essentials. Bought it quite a while back. The navigation sucks, info is marginal. The AVia disc is *much* better. You didn't really get a deal by buying VE, IMO. I would sell mine cheap. (With the blue filter, of course.)

VE was discontinued about a year or so ago, though there are still copies at some retailers. Last time I checked the new version has not been released.
I have VE, S&V, and Avia. Of these, I prefer Avia. But I also like VE and hope the new version will surpass Avia. One note: to properly use VE you need a DVD player that will pass a below black signal.

No problem with the below black on VE for me. But (now that I've been through the Avia) the navigation still sucks, details on setting sharpness is nonexistent (set it near zero? the Avia TEST PATTERN has mine right about in the middle!), the almost-impossible-to-get-to overscan pattern is weak compared to Avia's, etc. etc. etc.
Plus, Avia's multicolor levels and filters and their tips on minimizing effects of red push (reduce color level a bit if the red is high) and tons of other info are much better. The *flashing* patterns for color, hue, black level, etc., are *much* easier to use. ANd again, there's a LOT more useful info and MUCH better and varied audio signals on the Avia. No comparison at all. Although I'm sure the new VE will be much better. But my old one is pretty much a coaster now...

I did the Avia setup test for sharpness, and it worked out that the sharpness level on my set is just a bit to the left of the center mark (say, 40%), based on making the striped rectangles even in appearance and all. It's not a question of 'rule-of-thumb' recommendations, but of examining a test pattern to maximize the sharpness without producing artifacts. And this is based on examining the effect of sharpness level on a series of vertical stripes of differing frequencies. This is on a Mitsu rp that's been well-converged, about 4% overscan, etc., if that makes any difference.
FWIW, I think VE's approach of blowing off any sharpness test at all is a good reason for a thumbs-down. And I was amazed at the number of more useful audio patterns on the AVia disc, including several tone sweeps with frequency display and detailed info to check subwoofer polarity, crossover, etc.
