New HDTV Panasonic - picture isn't good

My 53" Pany arrived yesterday. I only plugged in dvd player and tried a few movies but I am not very happy with the picture.
Yes, cable tv - looks awful but I expected that. Now, with Panasonic RP82 progressive scan, I was hoping for perfection when it comes to LOTR, Matrix etc.

All settings were around 20 - 30 when I turned the tv on. Do they come like that from the factory or does store do something with them?

I admit, it is my first big screen toy, so I don't have much experience but I am having problems to make it look good. I have been playing with settings a little bit (my Avia disk should arrive today so I can try that too) but some movies really look bad.

Also, every few minutes, I get this 'see through water' like pictures - it is hard to describe but part of the screen looks like I am looking into aquarium? Distorted, but in a second it goes back to normal. What can I do with that?

I apologize for my newbie questions If you have any ideas please let me know. I was looking forward to having this tv but I am not very pleased so far.

Is progressive scan enabled? Are you using component inputs?

Give it a little time, and be sure to run the Avia or Sound/Vision disc! I had the same experience with my new WS HDTV but using the Avia setup disc made a word of difference (as did using PS DVD player & component cables).

I would make sure you are using progressive picture (steeings on DVD and TV)

Let the Tv go a bit, and see if it clears up. This could also be the reason the last purchaser returned it and you got it used...

Did you buy the warranty? Have them bring you another set, then you will get a new unit (hopefully) and plus be able to see if the picture is bad.

Thanks for quick replies.

Yes, I am using component cables and PS is enabled.

My main worry is that someone already bought the tv and returned it back to the store. When they delivered the set, it was dusty and a remote control wasn't new, there were some fingerprints on it. So I am wondering if it was returned because there is something wrong with it.

I'll keep trying tonight , hopefully with Avia.

Run, I repeat run back to the store and return your set. You do not want a returned set, especially a projection one. Make sure your new one is delivered in a sealed box.

Was the set cold when you plugged it in? I have heard that you should let them warm up before using them. Also, I have heard the picture can improve after 100 or so hours of use.

How far away are you sitting from the set? That could be a problem, I remember theres some rule of thumb that you should be sitting atleast 4x the height of the picture away.

re:

wolf husky

no, I let it sit in my room for about 10 hours.

Was the box sealed?
When they got the box from the truck, it had two plastic 'wires' across it, so they cut those, opened the box, took out 2 (I think)white polystyrene pieces holding tv in place, took the clear plastic wrap off the tv and carried it upstairs - no gloves. They didn't hit anything on the way, I was watching

I don't know if this qualifies as 'factory sealed'.

There is also a tiny cut on the screen frame, about 0.5 mm. Really tiny, but you see it when you look closely.

The plastic film wire is the factory seal.

Did you keep the box?

I tossed my box, even though I have a storage unit. I did keep the styrofoam bottom pieces that are fit for the wheel casters and form of the bottom of the TV though. Glad I did. When I moved (twice in last 1-1/2 years) I set the TV in those in the truck. Made me feel a little more comfortable about hitting all the bumps with the truck.

Dang! Wish I could become a Buddhist and get rid of all my $h~t!!!
