What's the best DVD Player that's under $150.00?

Hi guys,
I usually never venture into this part of the forum. So I apologize if asking this is wrong.
Recently my Panasonic RV-26 died. I want to replace it but I don't want to spend more than $150.00.
I have a JVC 32 inch TV. An old Pioneer Surround Receiver. So anything really fancy is a waste for me, plus I'm on an average budget. My main thing is picture quality. Even though my TV isnt High Defintion it can produce some crisp images given the source.

I do eventually want to upgrade my receiver to handle DTS and such so I would like those capabilities in the DVD player (which is probably standard now)
Sorry if I seem a little techno-illiterate....

Thanks for any help.
Chris

Thanks Brian, but that stuff's a little over my head. Basically I want personal opinions.
I liked my Panasonic, but it's a few years old. Should I get the newer model at that price range or is say a Pioneer at that price range better? All those graphs and charts on that site mean nothing to me.

Circuit City has the Sony NS715P for $149.99. I own this player and can highly recommend it.

Panny RP-62. Hands down.

or if you can swing $50 AND actually find one, the RP-82 may well be one of the best players ever made. The CP 72 can be had for about $220 shipped, and that's a 5-disc changer with almost identical guts to the RP-82.

The Sony DVP-NS315 works fine; it's $100. There's no point paying for progressive scan if you do not plan to upgrade your TV in the near future.

I agree, I work at CC in the DVD Dept, and I really do like the Sony 315 and the Pan PV-32. Both can be had for $100 (Panasonic after Rebate). I like the layout of the Pan a litte better personally, both are very nice entry models though, you should be fine with either. Personaly, I have the sony 5 disc changer, and a cheap Aiwa in my bedroom which I love both.

Progressive scan aside, the NS715P provides superior audio and video to the NS315 due to higher sampling rates in both areas. The NS315 is a very nice entry level player, but in particular if you want to go to DTS the NS715P is a better option. In any case, for me, I now have a depth of sound that I didn't have before and I am seeing the 3D video that people seek.

You might want to check out your local Circuit City. They are getting rid of their CP-72. I picked up the last one at my local CC for $150, and there is also the $30 MIR on it as well.

Agree 100%. I recently replace an old player and I found that these Pannys produce an image as good as anything out there due to use of the the excellent Sage/Faroudja chipset - and for a bargain basement price. A word of caution, the RP62 requires an optical cable for digital out (DD5.1 or DTS) if that concerns you, not sure about the others. Good luck in your decision.

Based on your comment I bought one to compare to the 315. You're right; it does sound better. I am not sure that it's worth the extra $40 for my use (a bedroom system), but there is a noticable difference in audio quality--especially on CD's. I haven't really seen a difference in interlaced video yet--then again, my 20in tv isn't a torture test. If I get time I may hook it up to the main system to see how it looks on a larger tv.

Do Sonys still have the overly soft downconversion? I would recommend the RV32 by Panasonic. There is NO point in spending the extra money for progessive scan if your TV is NTSC and you don't plan on upgrading anytime soon.

Since you price maximum is US$150, I'd HIGHLY recommend the Sony DVP-NS715P.

I've tried this player and the unit has excellent picture quality and excellent navigation controls on the remote and the player.

I would stay away from low-cost Panasonics because I've heard too many horror stories of them breaking down only a few months in to use. The Sony DVP-NS315 is a very nice low-cost player but its navigation controls on the remote are just way too limited for serious DVD fans (you can't to directly to a chapter number, for starters).
