Seeking advice on buying a DVD recorder!
Hi,
I'm trying to land on a good DVD recorder to buy, and I'm way confused about compatibility between DVD-R and DVD+R.
I will want to buy something that will let me make DVDs that will play in the MOST consumer dvd players - since I produce videos and I will never know what player my clients will be using.
Any suggestions on best recorders to go with, or whether + or - is best?
Thanks in advance for any responses!
-Tim

Use the search function to find a lot of threads on this subject.
DVD-R has the most compatibility overall, since it has been around longer. DVD+R/DVD+RW are nearly as compatible (though there are those who will stop at nothing to make you think they aren't) with DVD-RW coming in last.
Most players made since 2000 can handle DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RW just fine. I have two Sony players (one 2000 and the other 2002) and they all work perfectly. I've tied all three types in a myriad of players, and in most cases it was fine except for older, first generation units from 1997-99.
If you are using the units for business, the Panasonic DVD-R machine is probably the way to go. I use both systems for business, though, and haven't had problems.
Sony already has a PC based burner which is dual format (both -and +) and will introduce standalone hoem recorders that do this as well.

Steve,
Thanks for that info!
In my investigations, I seem to be having trouble getting both DVD-R AND a firewire port together in one unit for a good price.
I believe that the firewire will give me a better image than s-video since I am starting with digital video - that's correct, right?
I was looking at philips DVDR985a (that is +R but has firewire)
The panasonics seem to not want to provide firewire until they get to the $800 range (DMR-T3040).
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated... otherwise, thanks again for a very helpful post!
